POULET « GOLIATH »: Une race bénie pour le secteur avicole

Dans l’élevage des volailles, un intérêt particulier est accordé de plus en plus aux Goliath. C’est une race de poulets à part entière qui présente des caractéristiques distinctes à découvrir dans cet article.

Le Bénin est connu pour être le précurseur des poulets Goliath. Tout comme Fadole AHOGLE éleveur de poulet Goliath, beaucoup d’autres jeunes éleveurs s’investissent dans cette activité pour de nombreuses raisons. Il explique qu’il est très facile d’identifier les poulets Goliath à cause de leur taille et de leur grosseur. « Les poulets Goliath comparativement aux autres poulets sont géants et dépassent les autres en taille, parce que leur race a été obtenue par le croisement des poulets peulhs et nos poulets bicyclettes ». D’après son expérience, seulement deux sujets (un mal et une femelle) suffisent pour reproduire les Goliath, mais il y a un petit détail à prendre en compte. « J’ai constaté qu’il en a d’autres femelles qui débutent la couvaison mais n’assument pas jusqu’à la fin et donc il faut nécessairement une couveuse pour éclore ces œufs », dit-il. Par rapport à leur alimentation, les poulets Goliath mangent plus que les poulets locaux à en croire Fadole AHOGLE. Dès lors, il revient à l’éleveur de savoir calculer leur ration alimentaire et de voir quelles sont les matières premières moins chères pour pouvoir obtenir un bon résultat sinon il risque d’enregistrer une énorme perte. Mais cette race de poulet est de plus en plus prisée par la population ; cette dernière n’est pas encore prête à ce qu’il faut. Ceci fait dire au jeune éleveur de volaille qu’il faille mener une bonne politique à propos de la vente. « Le consommateur veut que le poulet soit gros et qu’il ait du poids mais ne veut pas trop dépenser or, pour que l’éleveur puisse faire un bon marché, il va falloir qu’il vende la femelle, à la rigueur à 6000f et le mâle à 7000f, or le consommateur dira que le coût est très élevé ». Comme bon nombre de Béninois, Benoît préfère aujourd’hui consommer plus les poulets Goliath que tout autre poulet. « C’est beaucoup plus tendre et très délicieux », justifie-t-il. Pour certains, vu l’intérêt que suscite sa production, sa vente et sa consommation, le poulet Goliath risque de ravir la vedette aux poulets bicyclette.
