En langage terre à terre, l’empreinte carbone est la quantité totale de gaz à effet de serre que l’on émet directement ou indirectement. Ces gaz à effet de serre peuvent être émis par un individu, une entreprise ou un service. Pour donner une image, je dirais que c’est la marque qu’un individu laisse à travers tout ce qu’il fait au quotidien en termes de gaz à effet de serre qu’il émet. Donc chaque jour, j’émets des gaz à effet de serre car le CO2 est un gaz à effet de serre, et même quand je respire, j’inhale du dioxygène et je rejette du dioxyde de carbone. On n’est pas en train de dire qu’il faut moins respirer, qu’il faut arrêter de vivre, mais c’est un peu comme si on donnait cette image. Quand je me déplace en moto, mon tuyau d’échappement émet des gaz et c’est pour ça qu’il faut entretenir sa moto, sa voiture et tout le reste. Donc l’empreinte carbone revient à cette marque que je laisse à travers mes émissions de gaz à effet de serre qui finalement vont réchauffer la planète et on va parler de changement climatique, de réchauffement climatique qui crée en réalité la chaleur dans l’atmosphère. Ce qui nous crée des problèmes, ce sont les gaz à effet de serre liés à l’action anthropique, à l’industrialisation, à toutes nos actions quotidiennes qui nous permettent de vivre.
Comment peut-on mesurer son empreinte carbone personnellement ou au sein de notre entreprise ?
Nous avons plusieurs possibilités, que ce soit au niveau individuel, au niveau de l’entreprise ou encore au niveau de l’organisation. On peut calculer ces émissions directes et indirectes, mais il faut commencer par recenser toutes ces activités pour savoir combien de gaz à effet de serre on est en train d’émettre et quelles sont ces activités qui sont génératrices de gaz à effet de serre. Par exemple, quand je marche, je ne peux pas placer ma marche dans la colonne des activités émettrices de gaz à effet de serre. Mais quand je prends ma voiture ou d’autres moyens de transport, oui. Quand je prends un Zem, oui. Quand je fais d’autres actions au quotidien, je les énumère, je les calcule, même mon mode d’alimentation. J’évalue toutes ces actions pour pouvoir déjà faire le point de ce qui, au quotidien, m’amène à porter atteinte à la protection de la planète.
Par ailleurs, les entreprises doivent pouvoir définir la portée de l’analyse parce que l’analyse doit leur permettre de savoir ce qui est inclus et ce qui est exclu en matière d’empreinte carbone. Le deuxième niveau d’analyse permettra de voir les activités internes de l’organisation, les émissions indirectes liées à l’électricité et à la chaleur. Et le troisième niveau d’analyse permettra de voir les émissions indirectes générées par les fournisseurs, les sous-traitants et les autres partenaires. Au niveau de l’entreprise également, pour pouvoir mesurer l’empreinte carbone, il faut collecter des données. C’est important car, comme vous le savez, aujourd’hui c’est la guerre des données. Les données précises et fiables sur les émissions de gaz à effet de serre aident l’entreprise à mesurer de manière réelle, quantitative et qualitative son empreinte.
Quelles sont les actions concrètes qu’on peut mettre en place pour réduire son empreinte carbone ?
Les actions concrètes qu’on peut mettre en place sont nombreuses, elles sont variées et chacun, en prenant conscience de ce qu’il peut faire, peut déjà adopter des modes de transport plus durables, privilégier le transport en commun. On promeut tout le temps le covoiturage et quand je parle de covoiturage, c’est pour dire que lorsque vous allez à une fête, c’est bien de vous retrouver à deux ou à trois, au lieu de prendre votre voiture seule. Autant proposer aux autres personnes que vous connaissez et qui sont sur le même parcours que vous de les emmener avec vous, cela fait du covoiturage. Il faut toujours penser à prendre des douches courtes pour réduire votre consommation d’eau. Mais attention, on n’est pas du tout en train de dire qu’il ne faut pas se laver. C’est bien de se laver, mais ensuite il ne faut pas exagérer dans la quantité d’eau que l’on utilise. Il est important de réduire sa consommation d’eau.
Pensez-vous que les gouvernements devraient jouer un rôle plus actif dans la sensibilisation et la réduction de l’empreinte carbone ? Si oui, de quelle manière ?
C’est évident que les gouvernements doivent être plus actifs, ils doivent agir davantage… Ils doivent rester fidèles aux décisions qu’ils prennent. Vous voyez des gens qui viennent, qui s’engagent pour l’accord de Paris et après on ne les voit pas agir. Vous voyez des gens qui disent oui nous sommes décidés à respecter ce principe de pollueurs payeur mais après ils reviennent pour trouver des excuses, revenir sur leurs propres engagements. Les gouvernements doivent être plus fermes que ça et jouer un rôle plus actif dans la sensibilisation de l’empreinte carbone. C’est important qu’on puisse investir massivement dans les infrastructures durables telles que les transports en commun de masse dans les bonnes conditions au Bénin à Cotonou principalement, on a vu ces bus disparaître tout doucement. Je le redis et je le martel, il faut soutenir la recherche et l’innovation. Les gouvernements peuvent soutenir dans la recherche et l’innovation dans le domaine des technologies renouvelables.

Je dis déjà merci à tous ces individus qui prennent conscience. Parce que pour réduire son empreinte carbone, il faut avoir pris conscience que c’est quand-même une action importante à mener. Mon premier conseil, ça va être de réduire la consommation d’énergie. Ce n’est pas très compliqué de mettre dans votre maison partout des ampoules LED plutôt que des ampoules qui consomment beaucoup d’énergie. Réduisez votre consommation d’électricité en éteignant les appareils électriques non utilisés. Il faut privilégier les transports écologiques, comme les transports en commun, prendre un taxi avec d’autres passagers plutôt que de prendre un taxi tout seul. Les transports en commun, le covoiturage, le vélo, la marche, tout cela permet de réduire les émissions de gaz liées aux déplacements. Il faut éviter les déplacements inutiles en favorisant le télétravail. Il faut adopter une alimentation plus durable, réduire sa consommation de viande, privilégier les aliments locaux, les aliments issus de l’agriculture biologique.
