Le neem est un arbre doté de nombreux propriétés naturelles. Son huile est utilisée par de nombreux paysans dans les cultures vivrières et maraîchères pour accroître leurs rendements. Autant de bienfaits découlent donc de son application aux cultures.

Au quotidien les agriculteurs sont confrontés à la baisse de leurs rendements agricoles à cause de l’invasion de leurs champs par des bactéries. Aussi, ils font face à l’éternel problème de l’appauvrissement des sols dû à l’utilisation d’engrais chimique. L’urée constitue aujourd’hui un engrais prisé par les producteurs agricoles, mais un problème se pose. « 50 à 70 pour cent d’urée que nous utilisons sont principalement perdus. Et ces pertes sont dues souvent aux lessivages qui entraînent la pollution de la nappe. Ou soit par la volatilisation de l’urée sous forme de gaz », dit Sabo ASSO ADAMOU, riziculteur dans la commune de Malanville et technicien au sein du Cadre de concertation des riziculteurs du Bénin (CCR-B). Grâce au CCR-B, la technique de l’urée enrobé à l’huile de neem est développée pour soulager les peines des producteurs rizicoles. Elle n’est rien d’autre que « l’urée mélangée avec l’huile de neem qui est directement extraite des graînes de neem », a expliquéSabo ASSO ADAMOUavant d’évoquer le processus pour faire la composition de l’urée enrobée à l’huile de neem destinée à la production de riz. « Il faut l’urée, des bâches, des gants, des récipients et puis de pelle si la quantité est importante. Sur un sac de 50kg d’urée, il faut apporter 0,5 litre de l’huile de neem. Une fois que le mélange est fait, on l’étale sous l’ombre 20 à 30 minutes pour que cela sèche avant de l’emporter au champ. » Tout est fait avec finesse pour obtenir un engrais prêt à l’utilisation. Et pour l’appliquer, « il suffit de prendre l’urée et de le mettre à côté des plants. Ça va s’effondrer d’elle-même », précise le technicien avant d’ajouter qu’elle présente de nombreux avantages : « elle ralentit la dissolution de l’urée et en même temps limite la pollution de la nappe. Elle bloque les bactéries qui transforment l’urée en gaz. Elle détruit les bactéries et les insectes qui attaquent les racines des plants dans le sol. Elle réduit la quantité d’urée à utiliser sur une unité de surface ». A en croire ses propos, l’urée enrobée à l’huile de neem permet d’accroître de 15{e43727ebdf1c82cdaf05db1b2e953f1c6b388407dfc0230603c9b856384b4112} à 50{e43727ebdf1c82cdaf05db1b2e953f1c6b388407dfc0230603c9b856384b4112} les rendements de culture et pour finir, elle améliore la structure et la texture des sols.
